Good question, zuzu. I was raised in a secular family that observed a cultural Christmas. To my mother, Christmas WAS the Christmas tree. I think I need to post on this...

Hugo, I have a question for you. You mentioned that you observe Advent now that you're a Christian, yet you also mention celebrating Christmas a certain way as a child, which makes me think that you were raised Christian.

This is a particular usage that I've been hearing, or at least noticing, in the past several years, one which I find perplexing. After all, I was raised Catholic; I thought we were the Famous Original (Original Famous?) Christians. And yet I hear from people I presume are evangelicals that "You're not Christian because you're Catholic."

So how does this work, exactly? Help a godless Yankee out.

Hugo, Emmylou Harris has a christmas cd out now. You can get it at Starbucks! What is the point at the putting the bleachers up so early? It doesn't make sense and they're ugly.

Dear Hugo,
I really like this post. I think I am post-evangelical. I don't know where I fall on the Church and radical inclusion of Gay/Lesbian lifestyles. I was reared very much against it. I know that I feel infintely more sympathetic, less judgmental, more united to those whose sexuality differs from my own, if only because it seems i know so little in general now, compared to everything I once "took on faith." I have wanted to ask you, in particular, just how your mind is so made up on the issue. I know see that it is more complicated than that, your heart is informing your mind, too. I like that.
I also really appreciate the humility you strive for in this post.

Well, darn it all. I lost my membership card for the Vast Conspiracy (I was a "deacon", based on my membership pledge; I couldn't afford to be a "bishop" or a "primate"). Still, it's disturbing to know that others out there not on our side have learned of our schemes... ;-)

Indeed. On my side, I repent for mentally demonising liberal Christians, particularly those who are also unregenerately pro-choice and Progressive. I still think they are catastrophically wrong, but I'm sure Louie Crew, Susan Russell and the whole Tribe of Ephraim are very nice, and only doing what they believe to be right. I'm prone to detecting Vast Conspiracies to Destroy the Faith; I repent for that, even if it's true. I've no business second-guessing motives.
