Guess who’s up late…

… and hitting F5 (the "refresh") key on his keyboard every few minutes to check election results?  I’m sipping tea, listening to Cake, Dar Williams, Dolly Parton and Jars of Clay on Itunes…  And though things look fairly good so far for us in the Golden State, I’m still fairly anxious — but heartened by results from the East Coast tonight, especially the gay rights victory in Maine.

So much for going to bed early to get up for an early morning run…

UPDATE:  Still up at 12:15, and the results keep looking better and better.  All of the governor’s initiatives are failing, as is the abortion notification initiative.  Turnout seemed better than anticipated.  Most of the outstanding ballots left to be counted are in liberal counties (Alameda, Los Angeles), and soon I will head to bed — cautiously optimistic.  I’ve been on the losing end of so many elections, it seems too good to be true that the left might have swept here in California tonight.

Those results are looking pretty sweet, eh? Democratic governors win in NY and VA, our crappy tort reform fails here in WA, and all your bad initiatives are losing.

Sweet indeed; I’ll read up on your tort reform pronto.

Prop 2 in Texas was overwhelming passed with 76% of the votes. Prop 2 was anti gay marriage.

I-330; it’s very complicated, but two of the most prominent features would have been a cap on non-economic damages at 350K for medical malpractice claims (which I don’t approve of but can understand why reasonable people might want it) AND a provision that would allow doctors to require patients sign a waiver before they received treatment (this is what really set my teeth on edge about it). Long story short, sop to the insurance industry.

We also managed to defeat an initiative that would have repealed a gas tax that we need for serious infrastructure repair, which completely shocked me. We just don’t vote down tax cuts very often, no matter how ill-advised. Feeling good after an election, what a strange and unfamiliar feeling!

Thanks, DJW. Uzzah, we knew that bill would pass in Texas. Heck, in Texas I wouldn’t be surprised if you could muster a majority to recriminalize sodomy (if they thought it would pass constitutional scrutiny). Maine is a kind of an ornery swing state, and so this win bodes well for the long term.

Oops, incomplete thought….sign a waiver renouncing all rights to sue for medical malpractice.

Blech! That should *NOT* have anything to do with the state constitution!
