Friday Random Ten: the “why can’t chinchillas do my grading for me” edition

Despite a huge load of grading, we’re off to Northern California for the weekend. A family wedding Saturday, and my mother’s 70th birthday on Sunday. Regular blogging will return on Tuesday. A good mix here; #4 is off one of my favorite ’80s albums, #5 became known to a new generation of fans through “Love, Actually” — but has always been a masterpiece. 2, 8, 9 are all covers of classics, each offering a radical new interpretation of a much loved song. #10 is one of those worship standards of which I am at least still periodically fond.

1. “Jerusalem”, Steve Earle
2. “House of the Rising Sun”, Be Good Tanyas
3. “For a Dancer”, Jackson Browne
4. “Queen of the Slipstream”, Van Morrison
5. “Both Sides Now”, Joni Mitchell
6. “Lullaby”, Loudon Wainwright III
7. “Breathe (2 AM)”, Anna Nalick
8. “John Henry”, Bruce Springsteen
9. “Strawberry Fields Forever”, Richie Havens
10. “Better is One Day”, Matt Redman

Bonus Tracks: “Did You Mean It”, Third Day; “Avila”, Wailin’ Jennys

Your Jackson Browne selection during grading season isn’t Running on Empty? It may be a bit of a cliche, but it’s certainly fitting.

  2. 2 Sociopathic Revelation

I’ve ALWAYS loved this duo, and however made this video of sorts did justice to this song; some of you will recognize the imagery.

It’s Lycia’s “Broken Days.” I can’t get enough of them, and that’s any of their albums.

I only keep taps on this band once in a blue moon, preferring their 70s output, but for whatever the reason I’ve always had fun with this Trevor Rabin-penned song. I also saw them in tour that year, and while this isn’t the specific time and place, it’s exactly how they were like. I’ve been a darker mood audio wise, I guess it’s time to balance that out.

Yes, with the tune “Lift Me Up:”

Thanks, Hugo, BTW, for letting that go through—I’d left the comment and forgot about it, then came back and saw it wasn’t posted. I thought you or someone else might appreciate the Lycia vid, especially. I can’t get enough of that genre of music.
