Stuff White People Like

I’m late to the party, but count me as a big fan of “Stuff White People Like.” Check it out for yourself; the entries on dogs, divorce, veganism, and marathons are spot on.

In a not-entirely dissimilar vein, here’s my old Happy WASP boy post.

as an ethnic person, i just have to shrug and say, “i thought so.”

white people are entertaining, i guess that’s why they run hollywood.

Honestly, I find that black somewhat offensive. Imagine calling a blog “What Black People Like” and having an entry entitled “Rap Music” or “Watermelon.” It would be wholly unacceptable and universally condemned, and rightly so.

Ack! Somehow an extra “black” slipped in that post without my seeing it. The first sentence should read “Honestly, I find that somewhat offensive.” The word “black” should not be in that sentence.

I liked the entry about rap songs. Reminds me of the face that every girl inexplicably loves the song “Gimme That Nut” by Eazy E. The first few times I heard it played at a crowded bar, I was floored at the response. I still see it happen occasionally, although I am rarely at those kinds of bars anymore.

Of course, the existence of this blog isn’t going to cause teachers to treat white students as if they were naturally dumber than non-white students, policeman to treat white citizens as if they were naturally more inclined to crime than non-white citizens, or television shows to start assuming that white characters can only be sidekicks or wise (m/p)aternal figures, not main characters.

Heck, it’s not even going to make my friends start thinking I like sushi.

So, it’s not quite the same thing, is it?

I think ’stuff white people like’ is pretty funny, but it’s untrue. For example, the article on vegans I just read an article in VegNews about vegetarianism and privilege and did you know this:

6% of white Americans are vegetarian
7% of black Americans are vegetarian
8% of Hispanic Americans are vegetarian

    ?

    Right. That’s the point.

    Stereotypes aren’t true.

Yes, indeed — and let me be clear that for me “spot on” means “a really clever caricature” rather than “factually accurate.”

I really don’t think it’s all that clever, quite honestly. But then, who am I to say?

Actually, if this were titled, “What liberal white people like”, it would be a lot closer.

“So, it’s not quite the same thing, is it?”

That’s not the point. Stereotyping in any form is inappropriate, in my opinion. Saying it’s okay simply because white people are being stereotyped is rather specious reasoning, I think.

hugo, this is hilarious. thanks for sharing the site.

It’s more what youngish, well-off American people like. And it’s funny.

And it should maybe include barackula.com and making (guilt-laced) happiness their number one goal in life. Or even just the next half hour.

I admit, I have fallen prey to that recycling experiment in #64. I have, in fact, dug other people’s soda cans out of trash cans after class and recycled them.
