When I was a kid - a little kid, like 4-6 years old, I used to hang out at my mom's job (in a university library) a lot. One of my favorite women there used to play fight with me a lot, and one of the other friendly people was a guy whose real name I can't remember but who my mom called "Ramona." At two different times, my mom told me that the woman was a lesbian and the man was gay, and what that meant (in the same sense that I knew what any other romantic things meant to adults).

So I've basically almost always known about gays and lesbians, and found them normal and commonplace. I've also (perhaps coincidentally, perhaps not) always had great gaydar. I mean, there were kids in middle school who I knew were gay. (Of course, I never got confirmation of it, but I'm confident to this day that I was right.)

It's been a good way to be - happy, accepting of the people around me, and able to enjoy the diversity.
