Thanks Hugo. Lovely post and one I needed to read right about now, missing my mom, pushing myself into change for the good, challenging my focus as a parent. Best.

Maybe you put more effort into it and in your mind you were 'faking', but it wasn't artificial. In fact, to me that is 'the real Hugo'.

FOATF, in a sense you're right -- our real selves are compoosed of many parts, and the public face we put on is in some sense just as real as the one we choose to wear when we know one else is around.

On the other hand, my public self was much more consciously artificial.

Why is the old Hugo that was hell to live with 'The Real Hugo' and the public one not 'The Real Hugo'? What makes one more real than the other?

hmm, i agree with you on carrying past lovers' influences. as much as i hate to admit it, i've learned and explored many things through men. music, art, books, new ways of looking at life. when i think about them, i almost instantly think about what they did to change me-and it's usually for the better. i think everybody's just a little narcissistic hoping that they've also left a past impression on their exes too.

btw, i also had the nosy ghost phobia when i was a kid. except it also included jesus and god, and i blame my sunday school teacher. they need to modify the whole "all-knowing" to "all-knowing-important-things." they also made a family guy joke about it too, but i can't find the clip. it's hilarious.

Francis: I know what you're doing in there, and it's a sin! If you ever do it again, you'll burn in Hell!

Chris: But I do it every day. Sometimes twice.

Francis: Mark my words, lad. You may think you're alone in there, but God's watching. Don't do it again!

Chris: God's watching me do number two? Oh, man. I'm a sinner, and God's a pervert.

Beautifully written. We live in a culture that encourages hatred of exes (there is something you could probably explain a lot on, Hugo), and I would rather keep mine in the communion of love from which they departure originated. Two are my best friends; perhaps the only people I can count on in this world to love me always. The judgments of the others still stand in my mind, holding me accountable to the best part of me that I at one point simultaneously sold and bought into where I saw the best part of them.
