I just read the sociopath post and that is me all over. Not being a sociopath, but the kind of girl who is fascinated by them.

My mom brought me up on horror movies and Stephen King, watching and reading along with me to make sure I understood the difference between fantasy and reality (I had cousins who did not). Not entirely sure how I feel about that part of my upbringing objectively, but I feel like it worked out alright for me.

Anyway, “from the perspective of a serial killer” type of movies, those rare evenhanded ones to come out of the 70s and that are seeing a revival today, were always my favorite and fascinated me endlessly. Mom and I recently watched an A&E series called “Most Evil” where a sociologist put killers on a scale of evil he created. What you say makes sense. It’s been so hard to disengaged from the unhealthy needs of others, or to overcome my often irrational guilt at doing so or putting my own needs first, these people seem freakishly free in a way so far from my understanding. I started out in psychology too, you know.

I was just thinking about this again after reading Cormac McCarthy’s Child of God and watching No Country for Old Men for the first time. I thought of you Hugo, when they pointed out that the device the guy in the film was using to kill people is the “humane” device they use to kill cows now. The unappreciated savagery in the lives of the “civilized”
